Important Information about Overdrafts and Fees

It’s important to understand overdraft coverage and how it affects you. This information can help you reduce the chance of inadvertently overdrawing your personal checking account and incurring unexpected overdraft fees on certain transactions made with your debit card.

What is an overdraft?

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway.

What types of overdraft protection does CertusBank offer?

We can cover your overdrafts in three different ways:

  1. We have standard overdraft coverage that comes with your account. This service may cover transactions if you overdraw your account. There is a fee for this service.
  2. Link your checking account to a second CertusBank account. This option will allow us to automatically transfer available funds from the linked account when your checking account is about to drop below zero. There is no fee for this service.
  3. Apply for an overdraft protection line of credit (subject to credit approval). If you overdraw your checking account, an automatic transfer is made from your line of credit to cover your transaction, up to your credit limit. You may incur interest charges, but not an overdraft fee.

The following information pertains to standard overdraft coverage only. If you have a linked account or an overdraft protection line of credit, the following information is not applicable.

What is the standard overdraft coverage that comes with my account?

We may authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions. While there is a $35 fee for each overdraft item we pay, this process helps you avoid returned check fees from merchants and/or not having certain payments made on time.

  • Checks
  • Online bill payments
  • Recurring automatic payments using your debit card
  • Any other transactions made using your checking account number

We do not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions. These transactions will be declined when you don’t have enough money in your checking account to cover the transaction. However, you will not be charged an overdraft fee.

  • ATM transactions
  • Everyday debit card purchases (non-recurring purchases such as at the grocery store or a one-time online purchase)

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined or returned.

What fees will I be charged if CertusBank pays my overdraft?

Under our standard overdraft coverage, we will charge you a fee of up to $35 each time we pay an overdraft.

Are there tools offered by CertusBank to help me avoid having an overdraft?

Yes, CertusBank provides several free services to help you monitor your account balance. Free online banking lets you monitor your account balance, transfer funds, view recent transactions and check images, and more. We also provide free 24-hour telephone banking that offers many of the same features as online banking. We also recommend that you closely monitor your account and keep accurate records of your transactions. You can do this by keeping a check register (available for free at any CertusBank branch) and listing all of your deposits and withdrawals (checks, ATM and debit card transactions, bill payments, recurring charges and other withdrawals).

Does CertusBank Bank offer overdraft protection options?

Yes. Overdrafts can happen to anyone. To reduce the chances of overdrawing, you can choose one or more of the overdraft protection options below.

  • Link your checking account to a second CertusBank account. This option will allow us to automatically transfer available funds from the linked account when your checking account is about to drop below zero. There is no fee for this service.
  • Apply for an overdraft protection line of credit (subject to credit approval). If you overdraw your checking account, an automatic transfer is made from your line of credit to cover your transaction, up to your credit limit. There is no fee for adding this service to your account. However, if you use your overdraft line of credit you may incur interest charges, but not an overdraft fee.
